Day 1 of being a Manager
Today is my first day as a manager at VMware. I have been an architect for 4 years and now lead a team of 7 Customer Success Architects. I am excited about this journey and wanted to publish what happens so that I might be able to help other technical people make the transition to the other side.
Finishing day one, found out that I need to set up 12 meetings a week. The number 1 pain point for my team is redundant work and communication. I thought the same and was one of the reasons I decided about this position. Learned that I need to replace a member of my team, as they are moving to different pastures. The process is going to be fun, but having half a team is going to be more difficult going to have to help do some technical work while I do manager work will be interesting for sure.
Knowing if I can get a quick win would help the team for sure, and putting things in the correct direction would be great. I still do not have full access to all the tools I need, as my manager has to put some requests in for me to get them. Should be this week and to be honest, I have a lot of meetings to set up and make some more mind maps. The fact that I am kind of taking over for my old boss makes it tricky as it is not a 1 for 1 replacement. More to come for sure.
